How Many Marriages Does Each County Record Each Year?

Add Dallas and Tarrant counties and you get 26,653 marriages in 2024. Each is up more than a quarter since 2020. North of them, Denton County gained 41.5 percent and Collin County 31.7 percent, which is faster than either.

Travis County moved the most. It climbed 60.3 percent from 2020 to 2023, and nearly all of that arrived in 2022, when the count jumped from 6,307 to 8,878. Williamson County, farther up I-35, held close to where it started.

The two earliest years were pandemic years, so 2022 is the fairer starting line when you compare counties.

How Has the Count Changed Since 2020?

The Travis County line stops at 2023. The state’s 2024 file records most Travis County ceremonies under another county, so there is no honest 2024 number to plot.

Which Months Do Couples Marry in Most?

October wins in all three counties. In 2022 and 2023, 10.8 percent of Dallas County marriages fell in October, and Tarrant (12 percent) and Travis (11.3 percent) ran higher still. Even spreading would give every month 8.3 percent.

Dallas County’s runners-up are December at 9.4 percent and November at 9.3 percent. January is the quiet month everywhere. Our weather guide finds that March, April, October and November are the Dallas months that pass an outdoor-friendly test, and October is the one of those four where marriages peak.

Dallas County has the flattest calendar of the three: only 4.3 points separate its busiest month from its quietest, against 6.6 in Tarrant County and 6.3 in Travis County. Travis County leans on spring. April holds 10 percent of its marriages, where Dallas County has 7.8 percent.

Marriages counted in 2022 and 2023 combined: Dallas County 25,671, Tarrant County 25,324, Travis County 17,894.

Which Days of the Week and Which Dates Are Busiest?

Saturday leads in Dallas and Travis County. In Tarrant County it’s Friday, with 29.8 percent of marriages against 25.8 percent for Saturday. Dallas County puts 36.1 percent on Saturday and 23.7 percent on Friday, and Travis County puts 39.4 percent on Saturday.

The index counts a quick ceremony at the clerk’s office the same way it counts a ballroom wedding, so these shares mix the two. A Tuesday marriage isn’t a Tuesday party.

One date beat every Saturday in the two years. February 22, 2022 fell on a Tuesday, and 250 couples married in Dallas County that day, 321 in Tarrant County and 158 in Travis County. November 11, 2022, a Friday, took second place in Dallas and Tarrant.

How Many Couples Travel to Marry in These Counties?

A Texas licence works in any county. The index records both places for each marriage, the county that issued the licence and the county where the ceremony was recorded, so it shows who traveled.

Two county clerk rules set the window for that travel. The Tarrant County Clerk states a 72-hour wait after a licence is issued before the ceremony can take place, and a ceremony within 90 days of issuance with no exceptions. Dallas County’s marriage license page says the same 90-day limit: if no ceremony has been conducted before the 90th day, the licence expires. A couple who buys a licence in Dallas can marry in the Hill Country, but only inside that window.

Dallas County is a destination for its own region. In 2023 it recorded 12,805 marriages but issued only 9,145 licences, and 38.9 percent of its marriages used a licence from another county. Tarrant County runs the other way. It issued 14,467 licences and recorded 12,574 marriages, and only 12 percent came with an outside licence.

The Hill Country shows the effect most. Across Hays, Comal, Gillespie, Kendall and Blanco counties, 55.5 percent of the 5,872 marriages recorded in 2023 used a licence from somewhere else. Blanco County tops the list at 80.9 percent. Fredericksburg’s Gillespie County is next at 72.2. Over in Hays County, where Dripping Springs and Wimberley sit, ceremonies (2,840) nearly doubled the licences issued (1,512).

What Does This Count Mean for Planning a Wedding?

These are all marriages, not planned weddings. The index includes courthouse ceremonies and small ceremonies at home, and Texas doesn’t publish how many couples hire a planner. Treat the counts as a read on how crowded the calendar is, not as the size of Poppy Planning’s market.

Read that way, a Saturday in October is the most contested slot in Dallas County: October holds 10.8 percent of the year’s marriages and Saturday holds 36.1 percent. A couple who’s flexible on the month or the weekday meets a quieter market. In the Hill Country, more than half of ceremonies come from couples licensed elsewhere, so a date there draws on a regional pool, not a local one.

Poppy Planning works from its studio in Dallas and its satellite office in Austin, where the team plans Hill Country weddings. For what planning costs, read our cost guide for Dallas.

How Did We Count These Marriages?

We downloaded the five yearly marriage index files from the Texas Department of State Health Services on October 16, 2026. Each file has one row per marriage. A script reads the county code at the end of each row and counts marriages by county and date, then writes plain tables that are committed with this site. A check re-runs the script on those tables and fails the build if any printed number differs. The raw files list couple names, so we keep only the county counts, plus each file’s address and SHA-256 fingerprint.

Each year, 2 to 88 rows had a blank county and couldn’t be read, out of 137,111 to 180,224 that could. We left them out, so no county count is off by more than 88.

The 2024 file has a coding problem. Trinity County is rural, and it had 73 marriages recorded in 2023. The 2024 file puts 9,614 there, and 8,171 of them were licensed in Travis County. We read that as Travis County ceremonies filed under the wrong county, and we don’t add them back, because that would be a guess. Travis County shows no 2024 marriage count, and the Dallas and Tarrant 2024 counts may be low by up to 64 and 48. Licences issued don’t depend on the ceremony code, so the licence table is complete for 2024.

For months, weekdays and dates we used 2022 and 2023 only. Both years sit clear of the pandemic and of the 2024 coding problem, and one year of dates is too thin to rank. DSHS hadn’t posted a 2025 file when we checked.
